Ruben Torres, an American fashion designer born in Dallas, graduated from Southern Methodist University in 1952 and moved to Paris to apprentice with Jules Crahay. After a stint in Portland, where he designed skiwear for White Stag, he returned to Paris and worked for Nina Ricci from 1961 to 1964. In 1966, he presented his first couture collection, futuristic and avant-garde, characterised by unstitched shapes. A visionary, he foresaw the future of couture in mass distribution and invented the monokini.
